Crossword Genius

The characteristic look and walk (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stamp

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'walk' is the definition.
(I know that stamp is a more specific form of the action the walk)

'the characteristic look' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'samp' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'and' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for stamp that I've seen before include "squash?" , "Imprint, brand" , "Validation for a letter - tread heavily" , "Mark of approval" , "Evidence of payment of postage duty" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
