Crossword Genius

The classic hero peers drunkenly at us (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

perseus

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'the classic hero' is the definition.
'perseus' can be an answer for 'hero' (I've seen this before). I'm not sure about the 'the classic' bit.

'peers drunkenly at us' is the wordplay.
'drunkenly' indicates anagramming the letters.
'at' says to put letters next to each other.
'peers' anagrammed gives 'perse'.
'perse'+'us'='PERSEUS'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for perseus that I've seen before include "Gorgon-slayer and rescuer of Andromeda" , "Group of stars" , "legendary hero" , "Medusan killer" , "'Having slain Medusa, he became a constellation (7)'" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
