Crossword Genius

The distant noise of little pigs (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

farrow

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'the distant noise' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.

'little pigs' is the wordplay.
'little' means to remove the last letter (the word is not quite complete).
'pigs' becomes 'farrows' ('farrow' can be a synonym of 'pig').
'farrows' with its final letter taken off is 'FARROW'.

'of' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for farrow that I've seen before include "Produce piglets" , "Give birth to piglets" , "Litter - very much on bank?" , "Actress" , "A litter of young pigs" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Independent.
