Crossword Genius

The Italian employed in time to prepare pupils for examination? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

dilate

'prepare pupils for examination?' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'the italian employed in time' is the wordplay.
'the italian' becomes 'il' ('the' in Italian).
'employed in' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'time' becomes 'date' (date is a kind of time).
'il' going inside 'date' is 'DILATE'.

'to' is the link.

(Other definitions for dilate that I've seen before include "Make or become wider" , "Become wider or more open" , "Enlarge - detail (anag)" , "Get bigger" , "Widen as eye pupils may" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
