The lesser charge (5,3)
I believe the answer is:
price cut
'the lesser charge' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both acts as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?
'charge' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'charge' could be 'price' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'price' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'cut' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
