Crossword Genius

The man's Italian and worker's uncertain (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

hesitant

'uncertain' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'the man's italian and worker's' is the wordplay.
'the man's' becomes 'hes' (he's).
'italian' becomes 'it'.
'and' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'worker' becomes 'ant' (worker is a type of ant).
'hes'+'it'+'ant'='HESITANT'

(Other definitions for hesitant that I've seen before include "Reluctant, vacillating" , "Reluctant (to speak, act)" , "Not quick" , "The Saint? (anag)" , "Tentative" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
