The number one iron in one's hand? (3,2,5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ace of clubs

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'iron in one's hand?' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'the number one' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'number' could be 'ace' (ace is a kind of number) and 'ace' is found within the answer.
'one' could be 'club' (I've seen this before) and 'club' is located in the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for ace of clubs that I've seen before include "card?" , "Top golfer" , "finest social venue" , "brilliant Batman!" , "one in a black suit" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
