The prison officer turned to go home (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

screw

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'the prison officer' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'turned to go home' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'to go' could be 're' (I've seen this in other clues) and 're' is located in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for screw that I've seen before include "Metal fastener" , "Bring pressure to bear" , "shot in pool hall" , "Fixer needing driver" , "Apply backspin (snooker)" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
