Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

I cannot quite see how this works, but
'staff' could be 'wand' (wand is a kind of staff) and 'wand' is found within the answer.
'bit' could be 'ort' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'ort' is located in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
