"There's no commoner letter ...." (Macbeth) (5)
I believe the answer is:
thane
'macbeth' is the definition.
(Shakespeare's Macbeth was Thane of Glamis)
'there's no commoner letter' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'there's' could be 'n' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'n' is found in the answer.
'letter' could be 't' and 't' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'hae' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for thane that I've seen before include "Anglo-Saxon aristocrat - old Scottish clan chief" , "Scots tenant of the crown, often a clan chief" , "Scot who held land from the king" , "Macbeth's Cawdor title" , "baron once" .)
