Crossword Genius

They look cold-bloodedly at a fall of the dice (5,4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

snake eyes

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'fall of the dice' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how they can define each other.

'they look cold-bloodedly at a' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'look' could be 'eye' (eyeing is a kind of looking) and 'eye' is present in the answer.
'a' is within the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for snake eyes that I've seen is " two in game".)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
