Crossword Genius

They produce pens without regular tip (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

makers

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'they' is the definition.
Both the definition and answer are plural nouns.
Maybe you can see a link between them that I don't see?

'produce pens without regular tip' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'produce' could be 'make' (synonyms) and 'make' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for makers that I've seen before include "Manufacturers" , "Creators" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
