Although both the answer and definition are plural nouns, I cannot understand how they can define each other.

I cannot quite see how this works, but
'new' could be 'n' (common abbreviation eg NT for New Testament) and 'n' is found within the answer.
'blooms' could be 'roses' (I've seen this before) and 'roses' is found within the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
