Crossword Genius

They're told to go to blazes (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

firemen

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'blazes' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both acts as well as being plural nouns.
Maybe you can see an association between them that I can't see?

'they're told to go' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'to go' could be 're' (I've seen this in other clues) and 're' is present in the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

'to' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for firemen that I've seen before include "Hose wielder" , "Their job is to extinguish conflagrations" , "Stokers" , "They fight conflagrations" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
