Crossword Genius

Things violinist might do to ingratiate themself? (3,3,6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

bow and scrape

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'ingratiate themself?' is the definition.
(to bow and scrape is to behave ingratiatingly)

'things violinist might do' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'do' could be 'ape' (both can mean to impersonate) and 'ape' is found within the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'to' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for bow and scrape that I've seen before include "Two ways to fiddle" , "Be obsequious" , "Behave obsequiously" , "Grovel" , "Show humility" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
