Crossword Genius

This will keep going round the peak (3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

top

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'peak' is the definition.
(I know that peak can be written as top)

'this will keep going round the' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'round' could be 'o' (round can mean a round object) and 'o' is found within the answer.
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is found in the answer.
A single letter 'p' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for top that I've seen before include "Children's toy" , "Apex; child's toy" , "Toy; uppermost point" , "Highest, child's toy" , "Highest point or position" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish News.
