Crossword Genius

Throw out due to thieving convictions, essentially (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

evict

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'throw out' is the definition.
(I know that evict is a more specific form of boot out)

'thieving convictions essentially' is the wordplay.
'thieving' becomes 'ev' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'essentially' says to take the centre.
The middle of 'convictions' is 'ict'.
'ev'+'ict'='EVICT'

'due to' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for evict that I've seen before include "Dislodge" , "Make homeless" , "remove someone" , "Force out of house for non-payment of rent" , "Expel from home" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
