I believe the answer is:

matchwood

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'timber which may be put to striking use?' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both natural objects as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps there's a link between them I don't understand?

'timber which may be' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'timber' could be 'wood' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'wood' is located in the answer.
'be' could be 'match' (matching is a kind of being) and 'match' is found in the answer.
No letters remain.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for matchwood that I've seen before include "Splinters" , "shivers" , "chips" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
