To make much out of nothing is a bad thing to do (4)

I believe the answer is:
loot
'to make' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both to do with ownership as well as being verbs in their base form.
Perhaps you can see a link between them that I don't see?
'much out of nothing is a bad thing to do' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'of' could be 'o' and 'o' is present in the answer.
'much' could be 'lot' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'lot' is located in the remaining letters.
No letters remain.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for loot that I've seen before include "rifle" , "Stolen property" , "Prize" , "Tool for plundering" , "Tool found among plunder" .)
