Crossword Genius

Token beer knocked back in old ship in Orkney, say (11)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

archipelago

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'orkney say' is the definition.
(I know that Orkney Islands is a archipelago)

'token beer knocked back in old ship in' is the wordplay.
'token' becomes 'chip' (I've seen this before).
'beer' becomes 'ale' (type of beer).
'knocked' shows that the letters should be reversed in order (I've seen 'knocking' mean this).
'back in old ship' becomes 'argo' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'in' is an insertion indicator.
'ale' written backwards gives 'ela'.
'chip'+'ela'='chipela'
'chipela' put inside 'argo' is 'ARCHIPELAGO'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for archipelago that I've seen before include "watery domain" , "Cluster of islands" , "Bahrain, for one" , "Fiji, perhaps" , "Philippines, say" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
