I believe the answer is:

toupee

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'covering' is the definition.
(toupee is a kind of covering)

'told how much money is due for head' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'money' could be 'p' and 'p' is located in the answer.
'for' could be 'to' (eg both can mean 'in the opinion of') and 'to' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for toupee that I've seen before include "An American man's wig" , "A man's hairpiece in America" , "Small wig" , "An American wig or hair-piece" , "False hairpiece" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
