I believe the answer is:

This clue could be a double definition.
'took an exam' is the first definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'an american exam' is the second definition.
'SAT' can be an answer for 'exam' (standard attainment test, UK exam). I'm not certain of the 'an american' bit.
