I believe the answer is:

chide

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'rebuke' is the definition.
(I know that rebuke can be written as chide)

'took refuge in church' is the wordplay.
'took refuge' becomes 'hid' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'in' indicates putting letters inside.
'church' becomes 'ce' (Church of England).
'hid' inserted into 'ce' is 'CHIDE'.

'getting' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for chide that I've seen before include "Tear off strip" , "Censure, berate" , "Rebuke, scold" , "Tell off" , "Reprove" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
