Took steps to keep to the beat (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

danced

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'took' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both to do with motion as well as being past participle verbs.
Maybe there's an association between them I don't understand?

'steps to keep to the beat' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'steps' could be 'dance' ('dance step' can be a synonym of 'step') and 'dance' is present in the answer.
A single letter 'd' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for danced that I've seen before include "Tripped the light fantastic" , "Moved to music" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish News.
