Traitor, given opportunity, taking cover (8)
I believe the answer is:
turncoat
'traitor' is the definition.
(I know that turncoat is a type of traitor)
'opportunity taking cover' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'cover' could be 'coat' (coat is a kind of cover) and 'coat' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'turn' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'given' is the link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for turncoat that I've seen before include "Traitor, defector" , "'Renegade, traitor (8)'" , "Rat" , "treacherous as one?" , "Deserter to opposition" .)
