Trap Poles smuggled over into heart of Greece (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ensnare

'trap' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'poles smuggled over into heart of greece' is the wordplay.
'poles' becomes 'ns' (North and South poles).
'smuggled' becomes 'ran' (I've seen this in other clues).
'over' says the letters should be written in reverse.
'into' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'heart of' means to look at the middle letters.
The middle of 'greece' is 'ee'.
'ran' in reverse letter order is 'nar'.
'ns'+'nar'='nsnar'
'nsnar' placed inside 'ee' is 'ENSNARE'.

(Other definitions for ensnare that I've seen before include "Ambush" , "Catch as if in a trap or net" , "Capture, trap" , "Ecstatic expression of feeling" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
