Crossword Genius

Travel and again back around the Home Counties and then back south for fruit (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

goosegogs

'for fruit' is the definition.
(goosegog can informally gooseberry)

'travel and again back around the home counties and then back south' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'travel' could be 'go' (synonyms) and 'go' is found within the answer.
'around' could be 'o' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'o' is located in the answer.
'south' could be 's' (abbreviation) and 's' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
