Crossword Genius

Tree bearing gift from Prometheus (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

fire

'gift from prometheus' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'tree bearing' is the wordplay.
'tree' becomes 'fir' (fir is a kind of tree).
'bearing' becomes 'e' (East, a compass bearing or direction).
'fir'+'e'='FIRE'

(Other definitions for fire that I've seen before include "Set light to; shoot" , "... or combustion" , "Blaze - sack" , "Manually operated device for dealing with flames" , "Sack; conflagration" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
