Trees and how they finish up in wood-burners? (5)
I believe the answer is:
ashes
'trees and how' is the definition.
'ashes' can be an answer for 'trees' (I've seen this before). I'm not certain of the 'and how' bit.
'they finish up in wood-burners?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'wood' could be 'ash' (wood from an ash tree) and 'ash' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'es' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for ashes that I've seen before include "''... to ..., dust to dust'' (burial service)" , "Remains from a cremation" , "Former Wimbledon champion's" , "Cricket honour in the fire" , "Powders remaining after fire" .)
