Trick signal from Robin? (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

hoodwink

'trick' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'signal from robin?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'from' could be 'in' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'in' is found in the answer.
'robin?' could be 'hood' (I've seen this before) and 'hood' is found in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for hoodwink that I've seen before include "Put wool over eyes of" , "Deceive, trick" , "Deceive, fool" , "Con" , "Delude" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
