Crossword Genius

Trim fruits in different heaps (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

shipshape

'trim' is the definition.
(I know that trim can be written as shipshape)

'fruits in different heaps' is the wordplay.
'fruits' becomes 'hips' (hip can mean the fruit of a rose).
'in' is an insertion indicator.
'different' indicates anagramming the letters.
'heaps' with letters rearranged gives 'shape'.
'hips' going into 'shape' is 'SHIPSHAPE'.

(Other definitions for shipshape that I've seen before include "In good order, like well-dressed sailor?" , "Hash pipes may be in good order - like sailor?" , "fashionable in Bristol" , "Neat, orderly" , "Nautically neat" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
