Crossword Genius

Trip sporting idol in the grass (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

holiday

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'trip' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how one could define the other.

'sporting idol in the grass' is the wordplay.
'sporting' indicates an anagram.
'in the' indicates putting letters inside.
'grass' becomes 'hay' (hay is dried grass).
'idol' anagrammed gives 'olid'.
'olid' inserted within 'hay' is 'HOLIDAY'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for holiday that I've seen before include "Vacation" , "Billie" , "Break from work" , "given a break" , "rest" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
