Trouble right behind English in Second Division (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

beleaguer

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'trouble right behind' is the definition.
The definition and answer are not the same part of speech.

'english in second division' is the wordplay.
'english' becomes 'e' (abbreviation).
'in' is an insertion indicator.
'second' becomes 'b' (B can mean second eg B-side).
'division' becomes 'leaguer' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'b'+'leaguer'='bleaguer'
'e' inserted inside 'bleaguer' is 'BELEAGUER'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for beleaguer that I've seen before include "Surround" , "Put in a very difficult position" , "put in a very difficult situation" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
