Crossword Genius

Try any nurses for pain (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

agony

'for pain' is the definition.
(agony is a kind of pain)

'try any nurses' is the wordplay.
'try' becomes 'go' (both can mean an attempt).
'nurses' means one lot of letters goes inside another (nurse can mean to hold onto or harbour).
'go' inserted inside 'any' is 'AGONY'.

(Other definitions for agony that I've seen before include "Pain, torment" , "Extreme suffering - kind of aunt" , "Extreme pain" , "sort of aunt" , "Suffering - anguish" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
