Turned up old Hitchcock role? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

cameo

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'hitchcock role?' is the definition.
'cameo' can be an answer for 'role?' (I have seen 'Brief role ' mean 'cameo' so perhaps 'role' could also mean 'cameo'). I'm not sure about the 'hitchcock' bit.

'turned up old' is the wordplay.
'turned up' becomes 'came' (I've seen this in another clue).
'old' becomes 'o' (common abbreviation eg in OE for Old English).
'came'+'o'='CAMEO'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for cameo that I've seen before include "Small piece of carved stone or small role in play" , "relief work" , "Piece of jewellery; small role" , "Piece of jewellery with carved portrait" , "Carving in relief, on a brooch say" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
