Twist again, as Checker might (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

restrain

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'as checker might' is the definition.
I can't tell whether this defines the answer.

'twist again' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'twist' could be 'strain' (I've seen this before) and 'strain' is found within the answer.
'again' could be 're' (prefix meaning 'again') and 're' is found within the answer.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for restrain that I've seen before include "Stop" , "stay" , "In arrest (anagram)" , "Arrest - confine - subdue" , "Keep in check" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
