Two different versions of European material (7)
I believe the answer is:
germane
'material' is the definition.
(both can mean relevant or pertinent)
'two different versions of european' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'european' could be 'german' (German is an example) and 'german' is located in the answer.
A single letter 'e' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
(Other definitions for germane that I've seen before include "closely related" , "apt" , "Related to the matter in hand, relevant" , "Relevant, pertinent" , "Apposite" .)
