UK novelist to cash their chips after race? (7)
I believe the answer is:
rushdie
'uk novelist' is the definition.
'rushdie' can be an answer for 'novelist' (I've seen this before). I am not certain of the 'uk' bit.
'cash their chips after race?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'race?' could be 'rush' ('rush' can be a synonym of 'race') and 'rush' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'die' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'to' is the link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for rushdie that I've seen before include "Salman -, Br. author" , "Salman - - (lit.)" , "Salman --, novelist" , "Salman -, Midnight's Children author" , "'Salman ..., author (7)'" .)
