Crossword Genius

Unfinished, a European match (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

agree

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'match' is the definition.
(agreeing is a kind of matching)

'unfinished a european' is the wordplay.
'unfinished' means to remove the last letter.
'a' becomes 'an'.
'european' becomes 'gree' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'an' with its final letter taken away is 'a'.
'a'+'gree'='AGREE'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for agree that I've seen before include "Accept" , "Consent required" , "Arrive at a settlement" , "'Assent, concur (5)'" , "chime?" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
