Crossword Genius

Unwillingly assembled French and German articles for exam (5,7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

under protest

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'unwillingly' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'and german articles for exam' is the wordplay.
'and german' becomes 'under' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should believe this answer much more).
'articles' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'for' becomes 'pro' (as in being 'pro' something).
'exam' becomes 'test' (synonyms).
'under'+'pro'+'test'='UNDER PROTEST'

'assembled french' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for under protest that I've seen before include "Complaining" , "Unwillingly" , "Reluctantly" .)

I've seen this clue in The Everyman puzzle in The Observer.
