Crossword Genius

Upshot of a lot of silence after short set (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

sequel

'upshot' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'a lot of silence after short set' is the wordplay.
'a lot of' means to remove the last letter (most of the word but not all of it).
'silence' becomes 'quell' (I've seen this in another clue).
'after' says to put letters next to each other.
'short set' becomes 'se' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'quell' with its last letter removed is 'quel'.
'quel' put after 'se' is 'SEQUEL'.

'of' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for sequel that I've seen before include "Novel or film that completes story of an earlier one" , "A following episode wrapping up the plot" , "Book etc. continuing story" , "Something following a related event" , "Upshot - what follows" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
