Urge football team to drop point (4)
I believe the answer is:
spur
'urge' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'football team to drop point' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'point' could be 's' (South) and 's' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'pur' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for spur that I've seen before include "Spike on a horse-rider's boot" , "Goad - branch line" , "outcrop" , "This provokes sudden movement!" , "Egg on or goad as horseman might" .)
