Use up the money once feeding about (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

consume

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'use up' is the definition.
(I know this)

'money once feeding about' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'money' could be 'sum' (I've seen this before) and 'sum' is located in the answer.
an anagram of 'once' is 'cone' which is within the remaining letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

'the' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for consume that I've seen before include "Exhaust" , "Use up" , "Eat, drink" , "Devour" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
