Utilise wide one getting into island? (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

causeway

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'island?' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe there's a link between them I don't understand?

'utilise wide one getting into' is the wordplay.
'utilise' becomes 'causey' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'wide' becomes 'w' (abbreviation e.g. in cricket).
'one' becomes 'a' (a thing is one thing).
'getting into' indicates putting letters inside.
'w'+'a'='wa'
'causey' placed around 'wa' is 'CAUSEWAY'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for causeway that I've seen before include "Raised road across water - may be a Giant's" , "Raised road through a marsh" , "Raised road or track" , "Raised road across low or wet ground" , "Raised road across wet area" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Mail.
