Crossword Genius

Vegetable new to some land (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

sweden

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'to some land' is the definition.
(Sweden is an example)

'vegetable new' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'vegetable' could be 'swede' (swede is a kind of vegetable) and 'swede' is found in the answer.
'new' could be 'n' (common abbreviation eg NT for New Testament) and 'n' is located in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for sweden that I've seen before include "northern kingdom" , "in E" , "Nobel's country" , "North European country" , "European kingdom" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
