Very great king accepting a fair option? (6,3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

bumper car

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'fair option?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't understand how one could define the other.

'very great king accepting a' is the wordplay.
'very great' becomes 'bumper' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'king' becomes 'CR' (short for Carolus Rex, King Charles in Latin).
'accepting' indicates putting letters inside (inserted letters are accepted).
'cr' placed around 'a' is 'car'.
'bumper'+'car'='BUMPER CAR'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for bumper car that I've seen is " one's driven to a series of bashes".)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
