Very pleased: first of checkers removed from board (7)

I believe the answer is:
chuffed
'very pleased' is the definition.
'chuffed' can be an answer for 'pleased' (I've seen this before). I am not sure about the 'very' bit.
'first of checkers removed from board' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'first of checkers' could be 'c' (1st letter of 'checkers') and 'c' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'huffed' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for chuffed that I've seen before include "Very pleased (colloq.)" , "Over the moon" , "Delighted" , "to have gone like a train?" , "what bad wolf did?" .)
