Crossword Genius

Vicar with debts, in work steadily until now (10)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

previously

'until now' is the definition.

'vicar with debts in work steadily' is the wordplay.
'vicar' becomes 'rev' (reverend).
'with' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'debts' becomes 'IOUs' (promises to pay debts).
'in' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'work steadily' becomes 'ply' (as in plying one's trade).
'rev'+'ious'='revious'
'revious' put within 'ply' is 'PREVIOUSLY'.

(Another definition for previously that I've seen is " Hitherto".)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
