Crossword Genius

Victoria? Name familiar to Americans (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

terminus

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'victoria?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.

'name familiar to americans' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'name' could be 'min' and 'min' is found in the answer.
'americans' could be 'us' (United States) and 'us' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'ter' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for terminus that I've seen before include "journey's end" , "Transport depot" , "eg Paddington" , "Roman god of boundaries" , "final point" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
