Crossword Genius

Visited, tossing round heartless jokes (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

sojourned

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'visited' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are past participle verbs, I cannot see how one could define the other.

'tossing round heartless jokes' is the wordplay.
'tossing' indicates an anagram.
'heartless' means to remove the middle letters.
'jokes' with its centre removed is 'joes'.
'round'+'joes'='roundjoes'
'roundjoes' anagrammed gives 'SOJOURNED'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for sojourned that I've seen before include "Onerous DJ (anag.)" , "remained a while" , "stayed" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
